Hard water is what kills your geyser, and what it costs you

Why scale forms, what it does to the element and tank, what descaling really costs a season, and how tank lining changes the maths.

If you live anywhere across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan or large parts of North India, your water is hard. It is the single biggest factor in how long your geyser lasts, and almost nobody explains it at the point of sale.

What hard water actually is

Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium salts picked up from the ground it passed through. You cannot see them. What you can see is the white crust around a tap, the film on a steel utensil, and soap that refuses to lather properly.

Those salts stay dissolved while the water is cold. Heat it past roughly 60 °C and they come out of solution and deposit on the nearest hot surface — which, inside a geyser, is the heating element.

Why that kills the element

An element works by transferring its heat into the water touching it. A layer of scale is an insulator. As it thickens, less heat escapes into the water and more stays in the element itself.

The element gets hotter. The water takes longer to heat, so the element runs longer, so it gets hotter still. Eventually it exceeds what it was built to withstand and burns out. From the outside it looks like the element failed. What actually happened is that your water strangled it.

This is why scale damage is excluded from every geyser warranty in India, ours included. It is not a manufacturing defect — it is a property of the water supply. Any brand that told you otherwise would be writing a warranty it had no intention of honouring.

What it does to the tank

Scale also settles at the bottom of the tank as sediment. That does two things. It reduces usable capacity, so a 25 litre tank effectively becomes smaller. And it traps moisture against the tank wall, which accelerates corrosion from the inside.

The tank is the part that ends a geyser's life. Once it perforates, the unit is finished — you cannot repair a leaking pressure vessel.

What descaling costs, honestly

Descaling is a service job: the technician opens the unit, removes the element and flushes the scale out. It typically costs ₹400 to ₹500 a visit.

How often depends on your water. In a genuinely hard-water area, a steel-tank geyser wants descaling once or twice a season, which works out at roughly ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 across a winter.

Over a five-year ownership that is a meaningful number, and it is worth putting next to the purchase price rather than discovering it later.

How tank lining changes the arithmetic

Scale grips a rough surface far more readily than a smooth one. A glass-lined tank — glass fused onto the steel — presents a much smoother surface, so deposits form more slowly and release more easily.

On those numbers, the price gap between a basic model and a glass-lined one is usually recovered within two to three seasons of hard water — after which the better tank is genuinely cheaper to own.

In soft-water areas none of this applies, and paying extra for a lined tank is money you do not need to spend. That is why it is worth finding out what your water is like before choosing.

The anode rod

An anode rod is a magnesium rod inside the tank that corrodes instead of the tank. It is deliberately sacrificial: as long as it is being consumed, the tank is not.

How fast it wears depends entirely on water hardness — typically one to two years. It is replaceable, and replacing it on schedule is the cheapest thing you can do to extend tank life. Not every geyser has one, so it is worth checking before you buy.

What you can actually do

  • Find out how hard your water is. Local plumbers know, and so do neighbours who have replaced a geyser recently.
  • Do not set the thermostat to maximum. Scale deposits faster the hotter the water. Around 55–60 °C is plenty for bathing and noticeably kinder to the element.
  • Descale on schedule, not on failure. Waiting until the geyser stops working means the damage is already done.
  • Check the anode rod every couple of years if your model has one.
  • Choose the tank lining to match your water, rather than buying the most expensive model out of caution or the cheapest out of habit.

The short version

Hard water is not something a geyser can defeat. It can only be slowed down, planned for and maintained around. Any brand promising you a geyser that is immune to scaling is telling you something that is not true — and you will find that out in about two winters.
